Montana Grizzlies is the nickname of the athletic teams of University of Montana. The university competes in NCAA division I and is a member of Big Sky Conference. It fields 6 men’s teams in football, tennis, basketball and other track events. The Grizzlies also fields 8 women’s teams in cross country, soccer, basketball, tennis, outdoor and indoor track events. The football team has won the university’s only NCAA championships.

The team was initially known as the Bears their mascot a live black bear was named Teddy .It was officially named as the Grizzlies or Silvertips in 1923 on admission to the Pacific Coast Conference. In the same year Montana became the firs state in the whole country to designate the bear as a protected wild animal. The name was later contested when a new PCC conference team UCLA changed their name to Grizzlies. When the latter tried to petition the conference in 1926 Montana claimed the rights to the name and the UCLA Grizzlies changed to UCLA Bruins when they were finally admitted to the PCC conference in 1928.

The team continued to use live grizzlies as mascots until early 1960s. Apart from Teddy the live bear they had other mascots known as Chester and Cocoa. Mascots in costumes were introduced in the 1970s and 80 although they remained as mascots of local sponsors but not the university. The current mascot is Monte, a shorter version of Montana which was introduced in 1993.In 2002 it became the first winner of the Capital One Bowl’s ″Mascot of the Year″ contest. The mascot won again in 2004 and received three other nominations.

The official colors of the university are silver, gold and copper .They were chosen in recognition of the state’s mining history and contrary to popular belief the colors were never changed when there was confusion about copper being represented by Texas orange or maroon. In 1893 the university chose maroon to represent copper due to a lack of copper dye, they also used various colors to represent copper. As a result the university’s teams were not always represented using the same colors. The school selected Texas orange to represent copper while gold was used on the university’s uniform and would remain so for the next 30 years. Maroon was brought back in 1993 as part of the University’s centennial celebrations .A student survey showed support for the return to silver and maroon uniforms and in spite of strong opposition in 1997 the colors gradually phased into maroon and silver that continues to be used today.

The Grizzly’s marching band was formed in the late 19th century and continues to uphold its rich tradition into the new millennium. The program endeavors to stay on the cutting edge of outdoor and indoor music performances. It features prominently on the University of Montana campus performing at all Grizzly’s football games at home. The group also travels to various conference games throughout the Northwest and has accompanied the football team to 4 Division -I-AA championships in recent years. The band’s signature tune ″ Up With Montana ″ was coined by Dick Howell a law student and member of the clubs in 1910.
